How & Why We Started Stork and Fox

Team Stork and Fox

Imagine...You just had a baby via C-section, something that devastated you since you of course had prepped for an all natural hypnobirth- without drugs, without interventions. You are recovering physically and emotionally (and yes financially!), and then your husband walks in the room and happily says he would like to start a business. Ummmm, what? I'm trying to learn how to keep another human being alive... (I had never changed a diaper before giving birth mind you.)

Fast forward another week through lots of phone calls, emails, and prayers, we had the beginnings of Stork and Fox in the works as we had taken over an existing online boutique from someone who needed it off his hands. With the crazy, coincidental timing of a children's boutique just falling into our hands right after having a baby, I was thinking, "Sure, we're perfect candidates! I've never worked in retail, my husband is busy studying to become a US citizen, my in laws who do not speak any English are staying in our tiny apartment for three weeks, we just had a baby who needed and still loves to be held constantly, I'm recovering from a major surgery, and I'm doing this while learning to breastfeed with breast milk literally everywhere and on 4 hours of interrupted sleep. SURE!!"

I still go back two months ago and wonder what we were thinking, but I truly believe in a higher plan from God, and I trusted that He was not crazy. We were, but not Him, right?

So, in the midst of all the craziness that comes with a magical new baby (our rainbow baby might I add, but that's for another day, which I may or may not ever put out there- time will tell), we started finding a way to make more hours in the day to undergo a complete rebranding. Website, name, logo, products, social media... EVERYTHING.

I'm a marketing and PR person in my full-time job, and I really enjoy it, so it was kind of fun to imagine what all we could do while exploring my newfound motherhood, but again, I was overwhelmed because I was out on maternity leave for a reason... to mother my new baby- not work!! However, I heard the little voice inside and not to mention the clearly audible voice of my husband's who was and is so passionate about this, and everything started falling into place. As I'm writing this, there's still a lot left to do, but for a strange reason, I'm not too scared! It could be the sleep delirium or the fact I've been on "baby crack" as we call it, but who knows!

Starting Stork and Fox has not been easy, but it's been fun, and we're learning so much! I can't wait to grow it with new customers while nurturing our existing ones, and all while watching our daughter grow, too! It's special to have birthed not only a child but a business along with my best friend, the father of my children, and now business partner.

I recently read this quote on another online store that sells maternity and nursing items called Kindred Bravely (I got a cute little nursing nightie!), and it really hit home for me:

“You go through big chunks of time where you’re just thinking, ‘This is impossible- oh this is impossible.’ And then you just keep going and keep going, and you sort of do the impossible.”
Tina Fey

I think all women go through this at some point, so hopefully our beginning story helps you to just kind of go for it. Don't think too much if you're debating about taking an opportunity. Sure, weigh the pros and cons and do your due diligence, but don't diddle daddle. If you think about it, there's never a "perfect" time for anything. If you plan and wait until everything is ideal, it will never happen.

More to come on who we are as a family and our stories, but I thought I'd give you the first bite on how we got this going...
